The Allan government is refusing to release “secret modelling” showing the true cost of Labor’s controversial ban on gas appliances. Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action is being taken to the Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal after it refused to release taxpayer-funded modelling as part of a freedom of information request lodged by the state opposition.
The freedom of information request is understood to relate to costings included in a regulatory impact statement for the government’s ban on gas hot water and heating systems. Picture: Getty images Shadow energy and emissions reduction minister David Davis condemned the refusal to release the costings.
“This secret modelling has been paid for by taxpayers, what does Labor have to hide in the secret costings in their regulatory impact statement and decision to ban replacement gas hot water services for more than 1.5 million Victorians? ,” Mr Davis asked. From March next year, Victorians will no longer be able to install new gas hot water and heating systems or replace existing ones.
“From 1 March 2027, when a hot water or heating appliance breaks and cannot be repaired, it must be replaced with a heat pump water heater or an efficient electric reverse cycle air-conditioner in the main living area,” the department states on its website. The ban is part of a host of regulations the Victorian Labor government has implemented in its quest to “lead the nation” in phasing gas.
Restrictions have been in place for gas connections for new homes since 2024, and from January 2027, all new homes and commercial buildings in Victoria will need to be all-electric. The Victorian Opposition has pledged to reverse the gas ban, claiming it will cost households “tens of thousands of dollars”.
“Labor’s gas ban is bad for Victorians and means less choice, higher costs and poorer energy security,” Mr Davis said. “Only the Liberals and Nationals will scrap Labor’s gas ban, restore energy choice and lower costs for households and businesses. ”
