Victoria Police members are voting on a no-confidence motion against Chief Commissioner Shane Patton amidst a long-standing pay dispute. The vote reflects a significant escalation in tensions, with many members feeling betrayed by Patton's decision to send their pay deal to the Fair Work Commission. If successful, the motion could lead to Patton's resignation. His actions, including a promise of no punishment for a member who publicly expressed pay concerns but later facing disciplinary measures, have further eroded trust in his leadership.
COMMENT To undermine authority is an extraordinary move, especially in the police force. Victoria Police members have today started voting on a no-confidence motion against the Chief Commissioner Shane Patton . It’s a yes or no question: Do you have confidence in the Chief Commissioner of Police to manage and lead Victoria Police? Patton and the Victorian Government have always claimed members are united and supportive of his leadership.
On that score, it seems the actions of one police officer may end up costing him a whole heap more than expected. Last month, a senior cop penned his wage dispute frustrations in an email to the Chief Commissioner, looping in the entire workforce. The member’s future in blue is in now up in the air, despite Patton promising no punishment. It’s been revealed the sergeant was forced to work from home immediately, and was never formally told to return to work, only doing so of his own accord.
