BREAKING: Victoria has recorded its highest daily spike in Covid-19 cases in more than a year as Dan Andrews prepares to outline a plan to ease lockdown.
The 120 new local cases is the highest daily spike in virus cases in more than a year, with 142 infections reported on August 25, 2020 during Victoria’s deadly second wave.
Another 56 new mystery infections were announced within the cases, with the department revealing only 64 of the new cases could be linked to existing outbreaks.The rising cases despite tough lockdown measures – with the 11 of the past 13 days recording more than 50 local infections – have resulted in the state’s sixth shutdown being extended beyond the planned end this Thursday.
The Premier said he would reveal the plan to Victorians on Wednesday and once the low case number thresholds were reached the state could begin a “modest easing of restrictions”. “The detailed plan will include thresholds if we can’t achieve zero despite our best efforts of how many cases can we tolerate,” he said.
