The Victorian government will implement new measures to combat corruption in the construction industry after a damning report on the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).
Contractors will be required to report criminal activity on Victorian government worksites in a new crackdown on construction industry corruption after damning reports arose about the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union ( CFMEU ). The construction and general division of the CFMEU was forced into administration after explosive allegations of criminal behaviour within the union, alongside the use of bullying and standover tactics, were published in July.
The reports arose just one day after the Victoria-Tasmania arm’s controversial secretary John Setka announced his resignation from the union. A formal review into the construction sector was promptly ordered by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and a report was handed down on Wednesday. The CFMEU was forced into administration in August after damning allegations of corruption were published about the union's construction and general division. The state government said it will accept all eight recommendations from the report, independently conducted by investigator Greg Wilson, either in principle or in full. This means the Victorian government will establish a complaints referral body relating to Victorian government construction sites and an alliance between state and federal law enforcement to stamp out criminal conduct on worksites. Additionally, the Victorian government will strengthen the Labour Hire Authority’s regulatory powers to better identify if a worker passes the “fit and proper person” test. It will now look at key details on a worker’s past including previous convictions, insolvencies, association with a person not deemed “fit” or membership to criminal organisations. Mr Wilson identified this area as a “problematic” as the frequent use of labour hire services meant people who had been kicked off worksites by one subcontractor could re-join the site via a service
