In an Australian-first, the Victorian Government will formally establish a truth-telling process to recognise and address historic wrongs and ongoing injustices against Indigenous Australians.

The democratically-elected First People's Assembly of Victoria will develop the terms of reference and how the body will work.

Marcus Stewart, co-chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, described the commitment to set up the truth-telling process as a"momentous decision". OPINION: A Truth Telling Commission – not Constitutional Recognition – is the next step for Indigenous Australians "Truth and reconciliation commissions have helped societies heal and recover from fractures and wounds across dozens of countries, including South Africa after apartheid, and in Canada to acknowledge abuses of its Indigenous peoples," she said.
