One council voted to recognise January 26 as Australia Day again, sparking criticism at a heated meeting.

Geelong City Council voted at last night's meeting to commemorate the date and discontinue any advocacy for changing it from 2026.A report will now be prepared and presented at the next meeting on January 28.

The reforms came after a six-month consultation period between May and November 2022, during which the council received 957 responses on the idea of choosing not to recognise January 26 as Australia Day. "Since the adoption of the January 26 report in May 2023, there has been significant feedback and there had been concern raised by the Geelong community," Kontelj said.Strathbogie Shire Council, which encompasses Avenel, Euroa, Strathbogie, Longwood and Nagambie, in central Victoria, also passed a similar motion last night.

The council said they would prepare and present a report in April relating to events held on Australia Day.
