A Victorian family is hoping to raise awareness about a rare illness that hospitalised their daughter and left her unable to feed herself. The parents of Indiana Pulham - Stacey and Damien Simpson - said their daughter fell from the monkey bars at school and was taken to hospital in Warrnambool, unable to walk. Doctors feared she had broken her coccyx bone and sent her home, but her symptoms became worse.
Condition commonly misdiagnosed Epworth neurologist Professor Amanda Gilligan said GBS affects about 1 in 100,000 people in Australia annually, but is even more rare in children. The condition causes rapid onset muscle weakness as a result of a person’s immune system attacking their peripheral nerves. “Normally, we make antibodies against infection, but unfortunately, sometimes our bodies make antibodies against normal tissue,” Gilligan said.
