A weeks-long committal hearing to determine whether Victoria’s Department of Health will stand trial over its handling of the hotel quarantine program that contributed to the state’s deadly second COVID-19 wave has started at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
The watchdog claims the department failed to appoint people with infection prevention and control expertise at the hotels, failed to provide security guards with appropriate infection control training, and did not provide, at least initially, written instructions on how to use protective gear. The court heard the government hired security companies Unified Security, MSS Security, and Wilson Security to staff the hotels, which in turn subcontracted work to a number of other security companies. The companies were responsible for providing their own personal protective equipment and training staff on how to protect themselves from COVID-19, the court was told.
