Share article The Victorian opposition is promising to introduce a salary cap for public sector executives, saying their pay needs to "meet public expectations". The cap on base salaries would be set at just under $600,000 a year, which the Coalition said is currently the salary of the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The move is in response to the government approving contracts for several executives that were above those recommended by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal. The opposition mentioned the salary paid to Transport Department head and former Victorian COVID-19 commander Jeroen Weimar. The opposition said a Big Build executive was approved for a salary of $834,000, which it said was $260,000 above the maximum salary band.
It also referenced the Department of Transport secretary, Jeroen Weimar, who earns up to $837,100 a year in the role. Liberal leader Jess Wilson said she wants to "restore financial discipline" in paying senior public servants.
"My team's plan is about ensuring executive pay meets community expectations and that our priority remains on the essentials," she said. "Whilst Labor is gifting quarter-of-a-million-dollar pay rises to Big Build executives, my Liberal and Nationals team is focused on hiring 3,000 more police to keep the community safe. "Under Labor, the number of public service executives has tripled, but crime is up, our roads are in disrepair, and it takes longer to get an ambulance.
" The opposition said base salaries for public service executives would be capped at the same level as the chief justice of the Supreme Court. Public sector pay levels for senior executives are set by the Remuneration Tribunal, which currently recommends a maximum salary of $573,328 for an administrative office head. The tribunal set the maximum salary for a department head, such as Mr Weimar, and the Victorian public sector commissioner at $837,100.
Employers who want to pay a salary above the relevant pay band are required to seek and consider the tribunal's advice, but do not have to accept it. It claimed the move would save more than $20 million by 2036.
