The state’s voters are ripe for the picking, but the opposition will need to do more to capitalise on Labor’s problems, not simply rely on their misfortune.

After weeks of instability and a growing number of legal fights, Opposition Leader John Pesutto has been thrown a political lifeline.and voters are starting to look to the Coalition after years in the political wilderness. While polls bounce around, the trend is undeniable: after nearly a decade in power Victoria’s love for Labor is slipping, and it has only accelerated since former premier Daniel Andrews left the job.

“One swallow does not a summer make, but it’s a good sign, and it should encourage us to stay focused on our goal,” one frontbencher saidAnother member of shadow cabinet said: “It’s nice to be on the right side of the ledger, but let’s not get too excited.”Their collective hesitance, in the face of good news, can be attributed to the fact the Liberals – while ahead on primary vote and picking up some vote share from Labor – aren’t yet in an election-winning position.

In other words, Andrews may have been divisive, but he managed to lock in swaths of voters who are now sitting on the fence. Allan, on the other hand, has been unable to shape a narrative and convince voters who have previously voted Labor that she is best placed to lead the state. The argument from many of Pesutto’s detractors is that his leadership – and decision to dump former Liberal MP Moira Deeming – has fractured the party room and broader membership. They also argue that mounting legal fights with Deeming will dominate his time and hinder his ability to sell an alternative message. As part of the research, Resolve asked voters whether Pesutto’s leadership affected their vote.
