For the first time in three years, tens of thousands of Victorians have gathered at the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate Anzac Day.
Free from COVID-19 restrictions, there were no caps on the number of people allowed or security fences barricading the memorial on the 107th anniversary of the landing of Australian troops at Gallipoli.Credit:The official party was led by Victorian governor Linda Dessau, who laid a wreath inside the sanctuary of the shrine, and included Premier Daniel Andrews, Opposition leader Matthew Guy and Lord Mayor Sally Capp.
“All those that have served or who are serving are the reason we have gathered on this holy ground ... indeed this is holy ground,” Governor Dessau said. “Every statue, memorial tree is holy, and they are made holy by the generations of Australians who served our country.” Senator Jane Hume was the official representative of Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who attended the Anzac Day services at Darwin where he also marked the 80th anniversary of the city’s bombing by the Japanese.
