Dramatic vision has emerged of an Australian F-35 jet performing risky, low-level tactical manoeuvres above the national park, in an incident believed to have raised eyebrows among senior air force figures.

Video has emerged of an F-35 A Lightning II jet conducting daring training manoeuvres, including a barrel roll and a steep dive, over Kosciuszko National Park last year.

The ABC has confirmed the video, recorded in February last year, shows "low level awareness training" that was being conducted by two fast jet pilots, a standard practice for aircrew across multiple air forces around the world. One RAAF member, who spoke to the ABC on the condition of anonymity, said the advanced fifth-generation Lockheed Martin-made aircraft activated its "auto recovery" system to avoid a collision with the terrain during the incident, although the Department of Defence declined to comment on that assertion.
