Vietnam recorded its first case of COVID-19 in January but four months later, there have only been 270 cases and nobody has died of it - an extraordinary result for a nation of 100 million people | jamesmassola
It's not all good news, however, as Vietnam has reported that eight patients who had the virus and recovered - recording negative test results - have tested positive again.
From February airport arrivals were subject to temperature screenings and had to fill in health declaration forms, like many south-east Asian nations. Dr Huong Le Thu, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, argues the one-party system has helped in effective coordination. "People have been fined and imprisoned. They are using the restrictions on information to crack down on fake news, which can often just be people sharing rumours, not people with ill intent," he says."Decisive measures to isolate confirmed cases, regular temperature checks in public spaces, limiting gatherings from early on and contact-tracing. Vietnam had its first case late January and by the end of January it already closed direct flights with China.
"We don’t necessarily believe the numbers. Vietnam has continuously had a policy of secrecy and of manipulating information to give it the best possible appearance," Robertson says.
