The Australian War Memorial has unveiled the refurbished Bronco aircraft for Vietnam Veterans Day.
The Bronco was a valuable eye in the sky for Australian and US forces in Vietnam, capable of carrying out reconnaissance flights, guiding artillery attacks on enemy positions and other key roles.
"The OV-10A Bronco stands as an icon of a lesser known story of the alliance between the US and Australia, and nowhere was that alliance more evident than with those Australians who flew as a forward air control in Vietnam," he said. The AWM has been working on the Bronco since it arrived from the Philippines on HMAS Tobruk 16 years ago in a shabby state.
It carried a two-man crew – a pilot in the front position and an observer in a seat directly behind – in a cockpit with a large bulbous canopy, featuring a view of the ground unimpeded by the high wing.Australian War Memorial
