People have been filmed running from spiralling volcanic cloud in Indonesia as the tallest mountain on the island of Java erupted on Saturday, spraying ash 12,000 metres into the sky and turning day into night.Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, released vision and images of the eruption on Saturday night including dramatic footage of locals in East Java province dashing down a street as Mt Semeru was engulfed in cloud behind them.
Officials said later that one person was killed in the village of Curah Kobokan, where most buildings were severely damaged.Indah Masdar, the deputy regent of the Lumajang region, told a press conference that eight further people had been trapped in a building by a lava avalanche and after sending video from their cell phones pleading to be evacuated, they had fallen out of phone contact.An image released by Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency of the eruption on Saturday.
Mt Semeru is among Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes and according to the Volcanology Survey of Indonesia, its first eruption was recorded in 1818 and there have been regular instances since, with lava spreading as far as 6km away.
