A 1920s Rolls Royce that a firefighter has likened to the famous car featured in the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang may have started a fire that gutted four Brisbane houses. Two homes were destroyed and two were significantly damaged on Evelyn St in Grange in the city’s north in the fire on Saturday afternoon. A man was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital suffering significant burns to his legs, hands and face.
“If you think of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, it’s that sort of car. It’s a chassis with an open cabin on it and engine on the front, fuel tank on the back and four open wheels.” He speculated that petrol vapours emitting from the car may have caught fire. “Quite possibly, the vapours from the petrol have evaporated and have come in contact with a light source or heat source, a spark maybe, or a naked flame and then it’s just ignited,” Hartley said.
