During the attack, Hayes, from Breightmet, Bolton, punched the victim over 10 times and throttled him when he claimed he had no money to lend him for a cab.
Hayes had burst into his housemate's room and rummaged through his coat pocket, telling his victim: "I'll batter you for it" when he found a £20 note. When the victim asked: "What are you doing?" Hayes pinned him against the wall and choked him with both hands until he could barely breathe. A member of staff at the accommodation both men lived came to the man's aid but was himself kicked and punched.
