The drop in violent crime largely stems from a decrease in aggravated assaults and deadly conduct offenses, according to data.

That’s a greater drop than seen citywide during the same period, according to University of Texas at San Antonio criminologist Michael Smith. Violent crime fell between 9.5 and 11 percent from January through April, compared with the same time last year, according to police department data analyzed by a team of UTSA researchers.

“We already see locations that are repeat , and we know that they’re hot spots… likely plagued by a number of systemic issues,” McKee-Rodriguez said. The city already has programs in place and “tools” that could address these issues, he said. A handful of council members suggested that residents who live in hot spots be brought into these conversations about potential long-term solutions.UTSA analyzes these areas every 60 days to determine whether they need to be updated. A map shared with the council indicates that between the first two periods — January through February and March through April — 17 of the hot spots remained the same.
