On Thursday, Mr Kobakhidze announced the decision to abort EU negotiations “until 2028” following consultation at the special briefing, taking the official party line that while joining the EU by 2030 was a priority, it could only progress on Georgia’s terms of upholding “dignity”.The statement from the Prime Minister followed the Georgian Dream party’s claim of election victory on October 26 amid allegations of vote-rigging from the opposition, which rejected the results.

According to Civil Georgia, Mr Kobakhidze contested claims his government was halting his nation’s accession to the EU and would sign an agreement immediately if it was put “on the table”.
