Virgin cancelled 15 to 20 per cent of its scheduled flights over the weekend, further complicating travel for passengers.

cancelled 15 to 20 per cent of its scheduled flights over the weekend, further complicating travel for passengers already fighting through crowded airports to get to their destination on time, as the spread of omicron sub-variants and a bad flu season made its schedule unworkable.

Melbourne Airport’s website shows Virgin cancelled 23 of the 92 departing flights it had planned for Sunday, compared to the 13 cancelled by Qantas and its budget subsidiary Jetstar of its 180 departing flights. An industry source said, across the carrier’s entire network, Virgin dropped nearly 15 per cent of its flights on Friday and almost 20 per cent on Saturday and Sunday. It is representative of the broader problems that have hamstrung aviation’s recovery from the pandemic, ashave resulted in bottlenecks at airports, changed flight schedules and baggage handling chaos.

“The number of travellers flying with us this school holidays has increased by 15 per cent in comparison to 2019 levels, which is significantly higher than the recent Easter holiday period,” the spokesman said.
