Families all across the country have had to get creative to celebrate the long weekend this year

Easter Sunday in Bree Hankinson's family usually involves the entire extended family picnicking in a public park in Melbourne, and staging an annual DIY Easter bonnet parade.

"There will be about 15 people on a Zoom call at 10am on Sunday to do the bonnet parade," Ms Hankinson says. This year, the family rules stipulate that bonnets can only be made with things that have been delivered to the house during the COVID-19 isolation period - swapping pompoms and feathers for food takeaway containers and toilet paper wrappings.

Lego-building, hot cross bun-baking, egg hunts and DIY crafts are all popular options for keeping kids entertained – but some families have taken their Easter isolation activities to the great outdoors. Organiser Ben Roarty has spent the long weekend camping out with his two sons Kai, 7, and Brayden, 15, at their property at Wallan, north of Melbourne. By Saturday, over 1000 campers had joined in the virtual camp-out from the across the country and had raised over $5000 for cancer research.

Trent, 11, Blake, 12, Hayley ,16, Abbey, 9, and 8-week old puppy Bella enjoy their Easter backyard camp out in Perth.
