Queensland Rail introduces new accessibility tools, including virtual tours, to make train travel easier for people with disabilities.

With only five percent of her vision left, Fiona Charrington relies on catching trains. The office worker uses the rail network across south-east Queensland weekly. A lot of planning still goes into her trips, despite catching public transport regularly and having lived with vision loss for decades. Ms Charrington maps out everything — from which type of train she would be catching, to where the doors and guard will be on the platform.

The Voices of Queenslanders with Disability report, released in July this year, found transport remains a key concern for the disability community. Report co-author Kelsey Chapman said a crucial finding from the 2024 research revealed transport was a 'bridging system' for people with a disability. 'It is a great enabler for better health, better employment and financial security, and for participating in everyday life,' the Griffith University research fellow said. Dr Kelsey Chapman, a university research fellow, co-authored The Voices of Queenslanders with Disability report this year. Queensland Rail's Nev Conway, head of corporate affairs, said he wants more people with disability accessing the network. 'Catching the train should be easy for everyone, from journey planning to the destination,' Mr Conway said. The state's rail operator has launched new accessibility tools to help people with disability plan their trips. The new features include interactive virtual tours of trains, carriage layouts, accessible maps, station descriptions, and a detailed how-to guide on Queensland Rail's website. The virtual tours of Queensland trains — including new generation rollingstock (NGR) and the upgraded interurban multiple units (IMU) 160 series — have been described by Queensland Rail as 'pinpoint accurate'.
