Students and working holidaymakers can get a $630 rebate on their visa fees on arrival in Australia in the next eight weeks.

A $630 rebate on visa processing fees for international students and backpackers might encourage some to bring forward their arrival dates, but it is unlikely to propel a surge in new demand, experts say.

Under changes last year, there is no limit on the length of time backpackers can work for a single employer, and those who work in northern, remote or very remote areas could qualify for a second or third visa. Jake Foster, chief commercial officer with international student migration agency AECC Global, said the visa fee waiver might have a greater effect if it was extended beyond eight weeks, but that it might bring some students’ arrival dates forward.Oscar Ong, president of the Council for International Students Australia, said the visa rebate was largely “symbolic”, given students spend more than $20,000 a year on fees plus living costs.

“It sends a clear signal to international students that we want them back from a governmental level,” Professor Frino said.
