Propellers and anchors tear up beds of posidonia, which releases as much oxygen per metre as a hectare of rainforest

“People from around here, professionals, know well the importance of Posidonia, what you should do and not do and what are the rules,” Mr Peréz, one of the crew of the new Posidonia vigilance patrol launched by the Valencian regional government,The crew monitors the state of the Posidonia by dropping an aquascope into the water, which is an underwater viewing device.

However, during busy summer weekends, the coast fills up with yachts and many do not bother trying to care for the Posidonia. The European Union Habitats Directive of 2020 protected 1120 Posidonia meadows across the Mediterranean which were threatened. Since 2017, the Balearic authorities have imposed 300 fines on yacht owners for infringing these rules.
