Australians have overwhelming rejected an Indigenous Voice to parliament in a bleak night for the Yes campaign and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Follow updates here.
Political editor Phillip Coorey says the devil will be in the detail for Peter Dutton and the Liberals. While Dutton has come up trumps against Anthony Albanese in terms of defeating the referendum, the opposition leader has been rebuffed in the former Liberal seats he needs to win back to form government. The teal seats overwhelmingly supported the Voice.
As of the latest counting, Yes votes led the No vote in North Sydney by 63 per cent to 37 per cent, while in Warringah it was 64-36, in Mackellar 55-45, in Goldstein 61-39, in Kooyong 64-36 and in Wentworth it was 66-34. Counting has yet to begin in the WA teal seat of Curtin. Nationally, the No vote is leading the Yes vote by 55 per cent to 45 per cent and NSW and Tasmania have been called for the No vote.
