The former Liberal MP completed a more than 14,000-kilometre run in support of Indigenous constitutional recognition on Wednesday.
, urging voters to hand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders autonomy in their own affairs at Saturday’s referendum.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese meets Pat Farmer as the former Liberal MP and ultra-marathon runner finishes his nearly 14,000 km Run for the Voice at Uluru.“It was a hell of a journey, and probably one of the most worthwhile of my life,” Mr Farmer said after arriving at the Mutitjulu Watering Hole at the base of the rock about 8am.
“This body is very old and very tired now. It aged a lot. In particular, the run up from Adelaide through to here was mentally excruciating because I felt like I had finally got to the finish but there was still such a long way to go.”An emotional Mr Farmer – whose run began in Tasmania in April and finished days before voters cast judgement on the political project of the Uluru Statement from the Heart – said the final day leg of his run was tough.
“There is something very spiritual about this place. My eyes connected with my soul when I saw it and I felt my purpose in life.”
