A volcano has erupted on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma, sending lava and a plume of smoke and ash into the air
Mount Cumbre Vieja erupts spewing a column of smoke and ash as seen from Los Llanos de Aridane on the Canary island of La Palma, on September 19, 2021.
Immediately after the eruption, the municipality urged residents in a statement to "exercise extreme caution", and stay away from the area and off the roads. A 3.8-magnitude quake was recorded before the eruption as vibrations from the seismic activity were felt on the surface.
