PennLive Letters to the Editor
I am Al Shine, part of the “Team for Change” running as Republicans for the five open slots on the Carlisle School Board. I am a retired Army officer with many years teaching experience at levels from middle through graduate school, including substitute teaching in the Carlisle schools. Twenty-two year Carlisle residents, my wife of 57 years and I are blessed to be grandparents of children in Letort Elementary, Lamberton Middle, and McGowan High Schools.
Along with the other members of the Team for Change I am running for the School Board to play an active role in educating the next generation of American citizens. I believe it is important that we improve the academic performance of our students in a safe environment which emphasizes the basics of math, science, and the humanities.
As a former history teacher, I believe it is of particular importance that we teach U.S. history honestly, including both our nation’s strengths and its failures, while avoiding divisiveness that emphasizes our differences rather than our commonness as humans. As a School Board, we should also be guardians of the resources of our tax-paying citizens, seeking to ensure that our teachers are well paid and money spent is wisely focused.
