Australians support the idea of an Indigenous Voice by a clear majority of 64 per cent, exclusive polling figures show, but many voters are unsure about the practical benefits of the move.
Australians have backed the idea of an Indigenous Voice by a clear majority of 64 per cent in favour of draft wording from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to give First Nations people a more powerful say in national affairs.
In their first question on the proposal, 53 per cent of voters were in favour and 29 per cent were against while 19 per cent were undecided. In the “forced choice” question akin to a referendum, 64 per cent were in favour and 36 per cent were against. The support on the “yes” or “no” question included 65 per cent in favour in NSW, 64 per cent in Victoria, 59 per cent in Queensland, 60 per cent in Western Australia, 71 per cent in South Australia and 73 per cent in Tasmania. The Resolve Political Monitor surveyed 3618 eligible voters in two stages, one in August and one in September, during a period of widespread media debate on the government proposal.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton accused the government on Friday of “making a lot of this up on the run” but Burney said this was “nonsense” because the government was working through the process.
