Homelessness services are being forced to turn people away and leave phone calls unanswered, according to a report outlining the impact of Australia’s housing and cost-of-living crises. The report by Homelessness Australia and Impact Economics makes an “urgent” call to the government to beef up support for frontline services.

“And then there’s a young guy only 20 years old who has run away for a violent home, who do they say no to in that situation? “Everyone need safe accommodation, but they have to say no.” For people on the brink of homelessness over the two-week period, there were 200 hours where services had to close their doors, 325 hours of unanswered phone calls, and 666 urgent emails staff could not reply to.
