WA’s Transport Minister says a “land bridge” will soon be used to offset the loss of the east-west rail link, amid warnings no freight is entering the state.

“There’s no freight coming into WA,” one truck driver told Perth radio station 6PR on Tuesday morning, claiming he worked for one of Australia’s largest transport companies.

Major chain Nando’s has signs in some of its restaurants saying chicken breasts, ribs and tenders are unavailable due to “COVID impacts”, while“I’ve been in this game for 30 years now, I’ve never seen it like this,” the driver told 6PR. “You’ll have the public screaming by Monday, Tuesday next week when these distribution centres really start running out of stock because nobody’s delivering anything at the moment, nothing is coming into the state.”Ms Saffioti said the government was working with industry on getting more truck drivers on the road and any border decisions in relation to COVID-19 would come down to the advice from the chief health officer.

On Monday, the Australian Rail Track Corporation said: “Repair works are underway along a section of track over 300km in length.”
