WA Labor barely holding it together as residents endure perfect storm

While all Australians are enduring tough economic conditions – inflation is a tax caused by government mismanagement which affects us all – those in WA are doing it tougher than most, writes Caroline Di Russo.

And it may seem like it’s too soon since the departure of the former premier, Mark McGowan, but the changing of the guard has already seen a shift away from the oft flaunted “she’ll be right” attitude associated with the McGowan regime.

In fact, CCIWA’s recent business survey found that over the last quarter business confidence had slipped considerably fuelled by weakening consumer demand, increasing labour costs and a persistent skills shortage. Additionally, inflation in WA has been tracking comfortably above the national average since June 2021. Like other capital cities, housing shortages and increased rents are also adding fuel to the cost-of-living bin fire; rents in Perth have increased 16.7 per cent year-on-year, surpassed only by Darwin.
