A statewide measles alert has been issued for Western Australia after a traveller returning from Bali was identified as a confirmed case.

The person was infected while overseas and has been treated at a Perth metropolitan hospital after spending time in the Perth and Midwest regions while contagious. These include the Royal Mail Hotel on Main Street, Meekatharra on Sunday, September 3 from 5:45pm to 8pm; a Spudshed in Kelmscott at 2853 Albany Highway from 12:15pm to 1:15pm on Monday, September 11; and Armadale Bunnings Warehouse at the corner of Ranford Road and Armadale Road from 12:45pm to 1:30pm on Monday.

WA Health Department’s Acting Director of Communicable Diseases Dr Jelena Maticevic said public health staff were working to contact people who have been exposed. “While there is no ongoing risk of measles at those locations, anyone who has visited one of the exposure locations at the same time as the case should monitor for symptoms and see a doctor if symptoms develop.

Measles is treated seriously by health professionals due to the severe nature of the illness and its delay in producing symptoms around 10 days after exposure.
