Western Australia's auditor general has issued a report examining the state's spend on rapid antigen tests after costs escalated from $3 million to about half a billion dollars.

RATs were initially used by health services at hospitals, within vaccination clinics and airports, before being offered to residents at locations including shopping centres, at train stations and at events."Plans at 30 June 2022 indicated that all stock would be distributed," the report, which took into account the 2022 state audit cycle, said.

Health Support Services warehouses grew from two to 10 to cater for the millions of RATs but it"struggled with the large increase in inventory", the report said. HSS said in its response to the auditor general's report that at the time RATs were purchased the state had"very limited options... for temperature controlled facilities suitable for their storage".
