With some temporary doctors earning more than $40,000 for six weeks of work, WA's health minister says the department wants to reduce reliance on locums in the regions.

At the Karratha hospital, locum practitioners can earn in excess of $3,000 a day.Job postings for regional locums in WA regularly advertise salaries of more than $2,000 per day.

The service did not provide exact figures on how much was spent per year at country hospitals but said in the past financial year it had reduced its locum and agency spend by $40.4 million.ABC News: Cason HoThe Australian Medical Association's WA president Michael Page said WA's regional health system had become "reliant" on highly paid temporary staff.

"That's what has apparently been necessary to get people to work in those areas because we have such shortages," he said. They said WACHS offered "competitive salaries and generous incentives" to attract health professionals to the regions, but locums remained an "important part of the country health system".
