Wunna Nyiyaparli elder Ailsa Coffin says her family's connection to Roy Hill stretches back generations, and a United Nations decision has backed her up. The federal government disagrees.

In a remote and culturally rich area of Western Australia's north-west, the leader of a small Aboriginal group is doing everything she can to lead her community towards formal recognition."Our people need a place, to come out of the cities, out of the townships, where they can just be themselves, without being frowned upon, without being discriminated against, without being looked at as less than," she said.

In March 2023, the committee ruled Australia had violated four key articles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Federal Court should reconsider the Wunna Nyiyaparli's claim. The response clarified that the Wunna Nyiyaparli were given a total of six opportunities to participate in proceedings, and claimed five of those were not taken up.

"It's not just through his birthright, it's through his entire family belonging to Roy Hill," she said.People gathered from across the state's north to celebrate one of the final native title determinations in the region.
