Australian Bree Walker shared the top spot with American Kaysha Love at the Lillehammer World Cup event, marking the first tie in World Cup monobob racing history. Walker secured her second World Cup monobob gold medal on her favorite Norwegian ice track, a moment of pride for the 32-year-old athlete. This victory also marks Walker's first win of the season. 'Really happy to be able to secure my first win of the season after being so close a few times,' Walker said.
Walker's journey to victory began with a strong performance in the first heat, clocking in at 54.56 seconds and securing second place behind Germany's 2022 Olympic champion Laura Nolte by a mere 0.01 seconds. She maintained her impressive pace in the second heat, again finishing second quickest with 54.58 seconds. However, she was surprised to discover she had tied with Love for the overall victory, both recording a combined time of 1:49.14.'Lillehammer is a special place for me,' Walker expressed. 'I came away with my first career bobsleigh medals in European Cup races in the 2018/2019 season, and to also secure my second World Cup gold on this track after a silver last season, I really love the track and I enjoy sliding here. I was feeling really good coming into this race, but I knew it would be very competitive, as always, so I just went out there and focused on pushing really fast and driving well.'This achievement marks Walker's 11th World Cup monobob podium finish, propelling her back into second place in the season's overall standings behind German Lisa Buckwitz. While Buckwitz leads with 1,437 points, Walker is trailing closely with 1,371 points. Buckwitz is well-positioned to defend her crown, needing only to finish eighth or better in next weekend's final World Cup event.
