The 'Walk of Light' raised more than £1,000 in memory of four-year-old Tommy Squibbs from Whitworth who passed away last month
Around 20 people of all ages gathered at Marl Pits in Rawtenstall for the ‘Walk of Light’, walking several laps while holding glow sticks and wearing light up hats, scrunchies, laces, and wings. The walk was in honour of four-year-old Tommy Squibbs from Whitworth who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia last September.
He bravely battled through his illness until he sadly passed away last month at Derian House Children’s Hospice. Chair East Lancs Down’s Syndrome Support Group, Rachel Shatliff, organised the event. She said: “We’re delighted and want to thank everyone who supported us. There were hundreds of people walking across the country and I believe over £250k has been raised overall.
“I am so pleased to have contributed to this total and into more research into cures for this devastating disease. I am particularly thinking of Tommy and his lovely family at this sad time.” The event was also to show support for Rachel’s friend of more than 40 years, Lizzie Spear. Lizzie, 55, was diagnosed with leukaemia in March 2021.
The walkers had a facetime call with Lizzie while she did her wheelchair walk in Bramshall with neighbours, family and friends. The target of £1,000 was exceeded and a total of £1,137 was raised from the event.
