Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Lori Grimes in TheWalkingDead’s early seasons, weighs in on the firing of original showrunner Frank Darabont. 'To me, it just felt like an assassination.'
The Walking Dead actor Sarah Wayne Callies recently spoke on the behind-the-scenes shake-up that saw original showrunner Frank Darabont get the axe, likening it to "an assassination." Callies played Lori Grimes in the show's early seasons, wife of lead character Sheriff Rick Grimes , and mother of Carl . Surviving the zombie outbreak and thinking her husband dead, Lori began a relationship with Rick's police partner Shane , until Rick was discovered alive.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Darabont, whose credits include writing and directing Stephen King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist, originally developed The Walking Dead series based on Robert Kirkman's comic series. After a successful first season saw the show on its way to become one of TV's highest-rated and most-watched series, Darabont was fired as showrunner by AMC months before the second season was set to begin production.
“To me, it just felt like an assassination. The reasons that we were given were that he’s unexperienced as a showrunner and he’s unprepared and he doesn’t know what he’s doing. But this motherf—er, one month before we started shooting Season 2, dropped six completed scripts in my lap and said, ‘You can learn these lines. They’re not going to change.’ And they were wonderful. This might be a controversial thing to say – you cannot beat his writing. You can’t.
It's hard to deny the impact Darabont had on The Walking Dead. He had been developing the show for five years when he sold it to AMC, and he set the show's visual language and tone with The Walking Dead's premiere, "Days Gone Bye," which is still regarded as one of the best pilots in TV show history. Reports eventually emerged that the main reason for the firing came down to cutting costs.
Darabont's exit from the show was definitely felt, as fans often cite season 2's extended farm plotline as a weak point in its run. It's entirely hindsight now, but it seems like AMC ultimately paid for his firing the amount of money it would've cost to produce the last 5 seasons of the show. They probably would've saved more money by keeping him on than they had to pay for giving him the axe.
