Spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11C, episode 17 below!The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang explains why Mercer let Negan into the Commonwealth so easily. Season 11 of the long-running horror-drama introduced audiences to another seemingly functional community known as the Commonwealth.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Walking Dead season 11C finds the Commonwealth run amok with angry protestors as Hornsby chases down a number of the show's core survivors. During the events of season 11B, Hornsby attacked an apartment building community that housed several families. Daryl now enacts a plan to get Negan into the Commonwealth to exact their revenge on Hornsby and save their people.
With Mercer, he's been on kind of a journey throughout the season too. You see that he really has very mixed feelings about the things that happen in the Commonwealth. But he's a person who is very rules-oriented, and he feels like he has taken a job of service and he's a patriot to his community. And so he's at this crossroads, but he's kind of moving to a mindset of what is the letter of the law, and what is just or right? He's kind of in that headspace.
What's Next For Mercer in Season 11 Mercer has dedicated his life to the service of the people within the Commonwealth, and considers duty above all. However, when his faith is compromised by the very people he's sworn to protect, he begins to doubt his own purpose in the community. Throughout The Walking Dead season 11, he formed a bond with Daryl and Rosita, his new recruits in his military police.
With Mercer as the leader of the Commonwealth's law enforcement, as well as a well-respected figure within the community, he will likely play a crucial role within the remainder of The Walking Dead season 11's narrative.
