Raelene Castle has come under major pressure in recent weeks over her role. But a Wallabies great has come to her defence. 9WWOS RugbyAustralia
Wallabies great Drew Mitchell has gone in to bat for embattled Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle, suggesting that sacking her is not the answer to the game's crisis.
Castle is under immense pressure to retain her role amid the damaging COVID-19 shutdown, with there being no broadcast deal in place for the sport next season. However, Mitchell suggested that the problems would simply multiply if Rugby Australia decided to replace Castle with someone less experienced in the role." whether she should be or shouldn't be in the role, I think the timing isn't right. There's just too much uncertainty."She already started the broadcast deal discussions and from my understanding it was pretty close to being a done deal with Optus before the coronavirus stuff happened.
"To start again with someone new having to get up-skilled with everything going on in Rugby Australia across the board and then to try and get this done, it's just going to be too difficult." Mitchell, who played 71 Tests for Australia between 2005 and 2016, also lamented the infighting that has crippled the game in recent weeks amid the pay dispute between executives and players.
