US's largest retailer Walmart says it will stop selling electronic cigarettes amid vaping backlash and deaths
In this file photo, a Walmart logo is displayed outside of a Walmart store, in Walpole, Mass. Walmart says it will stop selling electronic cigarettes at its namesake stores and Sam's Clubs following a string of illnesses and deaths related to vaping. September 3, 2019. The nation's largest retailer said on Friday that it will stop selling electronic cigarettes at its namesake stores and Sam's Clubs in the US when it sells out its current inventory.
But the industry has come under increased scrutiny after the deaths and illnesses – along with a surge in underage vaping. E-cigarettes represent a very small part of Walmart's nicotine business, which also includes traditional cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and nicotine gum, so the impact on the retailer will be small.
The Vapor Technology Association, a trade group, was quick to slam Walmart's move against vaping products while keeping cigarettes on its shelves. In July, Walmart, which is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, including all e-cigarettes, to 21. It also said then that it was in the process of discontinuing the sale of fruit- and dessert-flavored electronic nicotine delivery systems.

Retail Employee Has Little Daily Ritual Where He Drinks Dr. Pepper In Quiet Corner Of Stock Room And Doesn’t Kill HimselfOXFORD, OH—Emphasizing that some alone time was a completely healthy way to keep things in perspective, coworkers confirmed Thursday that 31-year-old retail employee Andy Ellison has a little daily ritual of sitting down on a box in a quiet corner of the stock room, drinking most of a can Dr. Pepper, and not killing himself. “Every day, he just slips in there with a drink, takes a breather, and casually but consciously decides not to put a bullet in his brain,” said junior sales associate Suzanne Rehnquist, noting that Ellison occasionally also brought a bag of Fritos, but never a firearm, into the peaceful back room adjacent to the store’s Sports & Outdoors section. “Andy knows what he needs, and if that means having a little daily routine where he takes five minutes, sips a soda, and doesn’t wrap his mouth around the barrel of a handgun and send brain matter and skull fragments fountaining into the office supplies, good for him.” Sources have expressed doubts as to whether Ellison will be able to keep up his little routine for much longer.
