Aaron Wan-Bissaka played four minutes in the first half of last season but 2023 is turning into an annus mirabilis.

For one week only perhaps, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is above Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and Reece James in the assists table.

Wan-Bissaka ended last season as he started this one - ahead of Dalot in the pecking order. The cute cross for Raphael Varane's winner against Wolves was Wan-Bissaka's first assist since December. Should he go another eight months without creating a goal then his contract may only be extended with a view to placing him on the market. But if Wan-Bissaka continues his reinvention as a foraging full-back he can expect a renewal.

Unlike a year ago, United are not entertaining offers for Wan-Bissaka. He is coming out of his shell more; consulting Erik ten Hag during the draw with Athletic and responding to the new edict for full-backs to become inverted. Interest in the Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpon cooled early in the summer.

Wan-Bissaka is more comfortable now at United and is spending more time in Manchester than London, having often retreated home during his first years at the club. Friends have moved up north and staff at the club have found Wan-Bissaka to be more jovial and opening conversations in recent months. "So it's about him to get really fit and to make competition with Diogo for the second half of the season."
