READ USA, a Jacksonville-based youth literacy nonprofit, needs to hire at least 50 more teen and young adult young tutors, age 16 to 23, before year's end. The additional tutors will allow the organization to reach a goal: 220 total tutors for its Literacy Tutoring program.For the spring semester beginning in January, the tutors will be paid $15 an hour and work nine to 12 hours a week at select Duval County public elementary schools.

"I tried to make it fun for them and make it something new every day," he said."They showed me how to be a leader and how to communicate and I taught them how to read, write pronounce their vowels and say the hard words that they can’t pronounce. It was really amazing. READ USA is doing great work." "Before a student can start lessons, we have to figure out where they’re at," he said."This is the time I take to get to know them. Before beginning, I ask them about themselves and all it takes is a question or two to get them talking. And after that, they do all the talking. … I take note of what they like about books, what they don’t seem to need any extra help in and what we may need to work on in the future.
