Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly changed its plans regarding the HBO Max and Discovery+ merger. The merged 'Max' streaming service will feature HBO Max's library and most of Discovery+'s library, but the latter service will remain active.

Executives at Warner Bros. Discovery have reportedly changed their previous plan to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one streaming service. Last year, AT&T's WarnerMedia merger with Discovery Inc. was finalized, with plans announced to merge the respective company's streaming services. HBO Max launched in mid-2020 in an effort to compete with massive platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and Hulu.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, per a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. Discovery has amended its previous plan. While Warner Bros. Discovery will still be launching its new streaming service this year, Discovery+ will remain available to users. The decision has reportedly been made in an effort to avoid losing a large number of Discovery+'s 20 million subscribers, many of whom may not be willing to pay the increased subscription cost that will come with Max .

Following Batgirl's cancelation, it was announced in the following months that various shows were being canceled and/ or removed from HBO Max, including the likes of Westworld, The Nevers, Minx, The Time Traveler's Wife, Legendary, Finding Magic Mike, and a host of others. The removal of dozens of shows and movies from HBO Max was part of a larger move by the company to reduce costs, with the decisions falling under a larger umbrella of Warner Bros.

Many of these removed shows, like Westworld, have since found new homes on free, ad-supported streaming services like Roku and Tubi. The licensing of these shows off to FAST channels and services is part of larger changes within the streaming service industry, with the method becoming an increasingly more popular way to cut down operating costs. The new, updated streaming service combining HBO Max's library and most of Discovery+'s is still expected to launch this spring.
