Travellers to northern Western Australia’s Kimberley have been put on alert after a deadly virus spread by mosquitoes was detected in the region.
WA Health confirmed on Monday the detection of Murray Valley encephalitis found in mosquitoes and sentinel chickens for the first time this year.
"Ross River and Murray Valley encephalitis viruses are only spread by mosquitoes – so the message is simple: protect yourself from being bitten," he said. Symptoms include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea, and dizziness, the government agency said.Officials warned those living or visiting the region to take the necessary steps to avoid being bitten as there is currently no vaccine available for the virus.
