"While flu has a strong seasonal bent - it tends to be a late winter thing - of course, it does occur all year round," he said.Last year, the government gave out free flu jabs but has not yet announced any plans to repeat this in 2023.
The federal government's Department of Health and Aged Care said while flu cases are up, last year's figures were affected by COVID-19 restrictions in place in 2021.It said numbers are still down on pre-pandemic levels. "A number of factors could be influencing the number of cases notified in 2023 to date, including increased international travel, changes in health-seeking and testing behaviours, and media reporting and community awareness of influenza," a spokesman told 9news.com.au.
"The proportion of cases observed in children in 2023 is not unusual in comparison to previous years, as healthcare tends to be more commonly sought for illness in children."
