Jim Logue says leisure facilities are at risk due to reduced funding and increased running costs

North Lanarkshire Council’s leader has warned that “swimming pools are at risk of closure” amid decreasing funding and soaring energy bills.

“The SNP government has inflicted savage cuts on councils, resulting in public swimming pools and leisure centres across Scotland having to consider being forced either to close or drastically reduce their operating hours. Councils cannot continue to provide the same level of local services without adequate levels of funding.

It also operates the Aquatec in Motherwell, where the swimming pool and health suite are currently closed; and the standalone John Smith pool in Airdrie, which now has reduced opening times including shutting at 1.30pm on weekends as well as closing in the middle of weekdays, plus Kilsyth swimming pool.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We place great importance on swimming pools – they are crucial to wellbeing and helping our children and young people to be healthy and active.
