It can also be fatal to dogs

Nottingham City Council has urged people to stay out of the lake at Colwick Country Park due to the presence of toxic algae. People have also been advised not to let their dogs in the water.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 12, council leader David Mellen said a high concentration of blue-green algae had been found in the lake which can cause serious illness in humans and potentially kill dogs. "We urge people not to swim or paddle in the lakes or let dogs go in the water or drink from it," he announced.

"We have also had to stop all fishing until further notice." Mr Mellen said the council is working with the Environment Agency to install pumps into the lakes to help remove the algae. However, he said this could "take some time".Mr Mellen also reminded the public that the parks and green spaces were "extremely dry".

"We have temporarily banned open fires and barbecues on all our parks and allotments to reduce the risk of fire spreading."
