Drivers who smoke could face a fine of up to £100 as a result of a Highway Code rule introduced earlier this year.

Those caught discarding their cigarettes out the car window may face a fine anywhere between £50 and £100. This is in accordance with laws introduced to limit the casual discarding of plastic based butts. "We are reminding road users to be considerate of other road users and obey driving laws for their own safety and the safety of others whilst travelling.”

Top Trending Stories Today The research, which surveyed 13,300 motorists, was conducted by the AA and found that many drivers were still unaware of the nine sections of the Highway Code that were updated, had rules added or were amended in order to provide more protection for vulnerable road users.
